On speaking with Mags, the Scottish retired neighbour who sold up and bought a Motorhome having always wanted to do so, who told me about Mano, who gives Spanish lessons on Wednesday afternoons conveniently in the campsite bar, I found out from Mano’s wife that Jorge’s Bar – http://www.jorgesbarcabopino.com/ – located in Cabopino Marina holds quiz nights on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 pm. It seemed an excellent opportunity to integrate into the local social life so we put the date and time in our social diary. Our first social engagement since arriving – so exciting!. As we left the campsite there were two other couples also on their way to Jorge’s so we joined the pedestrian coach, obviously socially distanced at the back, for the short journey.
It transpires it was at Jorge’s Bar that Steve tried to watch the England v Italy Rugby match over the weekend but was forced out by Halloween revellers. You can see images on Jorge’s website; of the revellers, not of Steve.
Anyway, we arrived at Jorge’s by 7pm. a beautiful bar in the Marina just like any bar in the UK, except for the clear blue sky, views of the boats in the marina and of course no walls or doors so we could enjoy the evening’s balmy air. The two couples we met, John & Heather and Steve and Edna, have been coming to Cabopino to spend their Winter seasons for the past 15 years or so. They were chatty, friendly and invited us to join their team The Celtic Quizzers. Steve certainly came in handy for the music round! I think we came fourth out of 9 teams.
It was an English couple running the quiz and yes, you guessed, everyone in the bar was English too. Jorge’s was so excited and appreciative of having so many customers, that they laid on complimentary tapas through the evening and extended happy hour from arrival until departure. There were strict rules on masks and local police did their rounds on a regular basis. If only the Covid rules were as enforced in the UK! The quiz and bar were timed to finish by 10pm so everyone had plenty of time to settle their accounts and return to their homes before the 11pm curfew.
Having had two fish bowls of the best Sangria ever, when there was a request for someone to run a future quiz I quickly volunteered Steve. His debut will be Tuesday 24th. I wonder if he’ll manage without his trademark fedora?
UPDATE since going to press – it was snuck on board:
Brilliant Blog Blanche, and you have really let everyone know how easy it is to join in
and meet other people for future get-togethers, as we have found out several times
since we met, and our neighbour Helena from Sweden, tonight being proof of that
with our impromptu drinks outside ‘mi autocaravana’ and the delicious food provided
by you and Steve.
I look forward to reading more of your and Steve’s adventures and also our future
get-togethers be it drinks, Spanish lessons or Ladies Who Shop and Lunch🤔🥰
