When I was a DJ ….

It was in the 70’s when a man slipped his arms into a bright yellow lycra shirt, put a star shaped drop earring in his right ear, slid into his velvet black jacket, ruffled his moustache, and donned the finishing touch – his signature Fedora – when he turned into a DJ; not any DJ, but Steve Harvey the DJ.

Based in the Manchester, performing parallel to Northern Soul, he rocked the local pubs, clubs and universities with his unique collection of vinyl; although we called them records in those days.  It wasn’t long before he had his play lists sorted, learnt the intros and ends to each track, seamlessly fitting them together for the dancers on the dance floor, whilst he was plied with Mancunian lager and love.

With income escalating with demand, and a move back to Marlow, his diary began to fill and the man was in the process of becoming a Legend.  The Legend began doing back to back gigs so invested in a van, complete with “sleep it off” mattress and giggling girl followers.  It all began to look like rock and roll.

Real work was inevitable, the evil day was put off for a bit – 18 years in fact,  not a bad run, but grunge music, late nights, too many pints and forever replacing light bulbs took its toll, turning  our 12-stone babe-magnet into what you see today.  The last light bulb died in 1995 and the DJ flickered away, becoming a dad, becoming respectably suburban, swapping wine for lager, sadly selling the gear, and fondly storing the records.

But that’s about to change!  Firstly the Sure Unidyne-B microphone was acquired.  Audio gear has been sourced from all over the country, period lights and controllers have been purchased, even spare bulbs are available!  Records have been supplemented by CD’s but the time warp of a collection will be bought out so you can hear the authentic hiss, crackle and pop of real music.

With barely enough strength and with the help of several lagers, some press-ganged roadies, and with the backing of an exceptional events manager and part time groupie, he’s bringing his exceptional talent back on the disco scene, for one night only.

Younger Days at the Peg

It is with delight that we announce the Come Back Gig of DJ Steve Harvey and extend an invitation to you:

Timing:  8 until 11:30 Parking:  Loads Eats:  None, bring your own Booze:  We’ll supply the mixers, you bring your own spirits, beer and wine

Dress Code:  Disco – the cheesier the better – Entertainment:  Varied and eclectic, but don’t expect anything modern!

Crash: If you would like to crash and save the journey home until Sunday (remember the old days), then we possibly have a spare bedroom or two, a sofa bed, caravan and plenty of tent space in the back garden with overspill for caravans and motorhomes in the front garden (brunch served Sunday).  It’s only about a mile and half from the venue, so easy to stagger back to, or cadge a lift. Do tell your friends and bring as many groupies as you can.  Frankly we need as large an appreciative audience as possible.

Unrehearsed, Rusty and Raw – it will be fun !
