Celebrations

10 Years a Team

On 4th May we moored up outside the Cutter Pub in Ely to have a good walk around the town.  Unfortunately the heavens opened up on our return to Pegasus which is when I realised that we’d bought Steve a waterproof jacket and I had been unusually conservative with spending.  How so, well I knew I had a couple of shower proof jackets and didn’t think I needed another.  However, drenched from a deluge I realised my shower proofs were just that and I needed a full waterproof too!  We needed to find a Mountain Warehouse. If he had one, I wanted one too.

That evening we celebrated having been together for 10 years in a wonderful perfect restaurant called Urban Fresh. I think it’s a chain and well worth a try. The service was superb, the food beautifully presented and totally delicious. Ten years is quite a milestone and achievement especially bearing in mind through some of our fit out on the boat I wasn’t all smiles and happiness. All I can say is that Steve is one of the most caring and patient people I have ever met and we’re never ever going to fit out a boat again! Well, certainly not living on it at the same time!

We both take photos, both love throwing parties, both love socialising. We both cook but Steve is only allowed on special occasions when I’m in the mood to clean up after him. We enjoyed our evening and drank to everyone’s health who we love and admire both present and recently no longer with us. Life is short. Thankfully we’re both keen to make the most of each day.

The Kings Coronation / Salters Lode

I watched the proceedings of King Charles (Camilla doesn’t count) whilst Steve navigated two of the most challenging maneuvers on our route, indeed on the River Nene; Denver Lock and Salters Lode. It’s tidal with a sharp turn to port (left, not the bottle although we were reaching for one later as a nightcap!). We’d watched videos of narrowboats making a right hash of it, missing the turn and even ending up going in backwards mostly because narrowboats have flat bottoms and are easily moved by wind and currents. Both had to be booked in advance. Steve was now on first name terms with the lock keepers. Steve was talked through to proceed. He lined up. He steered positively but slowly, determinedly but carefully. He nailed in in one. I know which event of the day was more exciting for us.
